Catawba Science Center Hickory, NCAre you looking for a fun, educational experience for the kids? Then look no further than the Catawba Science Center located in Hickory, NC. The center is huge with many hands-on activities to hold the attention of younger children. However, there are age-appropriate activities for children ranging from pre-k to ninth grade.

The Planetarium

Inside of the science center is the Millholland Planetarium. It seats 65 people under a large, 30-foot domed, digital screen that displays beautiful images of space. You won’t just see the constellations, though. You’ll be taken on a digital journey to black holes, travel the rings around distant planets and so much more.

There is an amazing surround sound system that really helps bring the experience to life. The planetarium can be booked for private showings as well.

The Aquarium

There are several different sections of the aquarium to explore. The saltwater gallery is a manmade ‘river’ in a natural-looking container that winds through the gallery. It’s at the perfect height for young children to walk over, peer into and even touch the fish that swim by.

There are other aquariums, both fresh and saltwater, as well that hold larger sea creatures that children can observe through the plated glass.

Gross Labs at the Catawba Science Center

At Gross Labs, kids get to be scientists. There’s a job application, white coats, and everything they need to make it feel “official.” Once hired, they’ll analyze ‘gross’ things like fecal matter and snot.

But it’s not just an opportunity to talk about gross things. Everything is approached scientifically, and kids get a good understanding of the scientific method and other things associated with real STEM jobs. Gross Labs is more appropriate for older children because of the level of science involved.

Energy Avenue

Energy Avenue is perfect for younger children who have lots of energy to burn. However, that is not the reason for its name. Energy Avenue focuses on teaching children about different ways energy is generated and used, it just so happens that they’ll be burning plenty of their own while doing it. They can race their friends and take a ride on a giant spinner.

Treehouse Adventures

This is another exhibit perfect for the youngest in the bunch. They’ll learn about every season through hands-on activities like building snowmen and harvesting make-believe crops. It’s a bright, fun place that encourages children to use all of their senses to learn about the world around them.

The Science Shop

After a day of educational fun, you can stop by the science shop and purchase souvenirs to commemorate your experience or as a gift for someone else. The shop has a large selection of items.

You can buy t-shirts, stuff animals, cups, hats, games, and puzzles just to name a few. You can also buy gift cards to the center to provide an opportunity for another child to experience this wonderful place.

There is much more to do at the center than listed here. You’ll have to go for a visit to see everything they have to offer. After exploring the center, stop by Cloninger Ford for a test drive.
