Since then, it’s become a bustling tourist area with many different things to see and do. Below are some of the highlights you’ll find in Hickory.

1. Catawba Science Center

This is a must-see when you’re in the area, especially if you have kids (although adults will find plenty to do, too). It’s 35,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits and interactive educational activities. The exhibits range from science technology to a tornado simulator to a planetarium.

We can’t list them all here, but there is a lot more to see and do at this center.

2. Catawba Aquarium

With both freshwater and saltwater tanks, this aquarium offers visitors a chance to explore underwater wildlife. The saltwater tanks include sharks and stingrays.

If you’re not afraid to touch some of these creatures, you’re allowed to handle hermit crabs. A coral reef with freshwater fish is another amazing sight to see at the aquarium. Don’t miss it!

3. Treetop Adventures

As the name implies, you can get up and personal with some big trees. There are obstacle courses of all levels to choose from. The most popular is the Explorer Challenge, with three zip lines and the 10 obstacle challenges. For the kids, there are youth challenge expeditions that are fun and safe for all.

4. Hickory Community Theater

For those looking for a less challenging experience, the Hickory Community Theater is a great choice. It opened in 1949 and has grown by leaps and bounds since then. There’s a new play almost every month at this award-winning theater. Go online ahead of time to see all of the choices.

5. Lake Hickory Adventures

Water activities are always a crowd-pleaser. No matter what time of year, there are many types of cruises you can take on Lake Hickory. The Christmas Lights and Caroling Dinner Cruise is a highlight. It’s a festive boat ride with all the trimmings. The 4th of July cruise is also a big hit with lots of fireworks.

6. Fishing Charters

Lake Hickory is a well-known fishing area that’s full of bass, walleye, and many other freshwater fish. There’s a fun fishing charter with a guide that’s geared for kids. Another exciting trip is a charter that’s described as a full-on fish-finding adventure. You can take charters at night too.

7. Kiwanis Park Children’s Playground

If the kids need to burn off some energy, this is the place to do it. This park has many different activities in one place. A few of the popular ones include a splash pad, walking trails, a picnic area, and a basketball court. They won’t be bored there.
